Families in Normanton, Karumba and surrounding Gulf communities can join early-years library sessions, plan a swim when local pools are operating, or reach culturally responsive and confidential support by phone. 📚 Learning and active play

Normanton and Karumba Library — First 5 Forever

Children aged 0–5 can share stories and early-literacy activities at weekly First 5 Forever sessions in both libraries. Carpentaria Shire Council lists sessions for Thursdays from 10 am to 11 am. Families can also borrow junior books, baby board books and read-along kits.

Normanton and Karumba Swimming Pools

The council-operated pools provide a local option for family swimming when open. Normanton Pool is listed to reopen on 12 September 2026, with afternoon weekday and weekend sessions, child entry and family passes. Karumba Pool is currently closed for the autumn and winter season, so check its operating status before setting out.

Gidgee Healing — Family Wellbeing

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families can access free, culturally responsive support focused on social, emotional, physical and spiritual wellbeing, including help to care safely for children. Gidgee Healing provides services across the North West and Lower Gulf and confirms a Normanton playgroup. Call 1800 433 443 and select option 6 for Family Wellbeing.

Family and Child Connect

This free, confidential Queensland-wide pathway helps families connect with local services that can support them in caring for children. Families in the Carpentaria region can call 13 FAMILY (13 32 64), with interpreters available.
